Indoor Rock Climbing

Experience the vertical world of rock climbing on 2000 sq. ft. of sculpted terrain. Press your physical and emotional limits to the edge. Climb along sheer verticals, sculpted bulges and horizontal overhangs. Know the thrill of accomplishing something you never thought you could do when you reach the top of a route that looked impossible from the ground. Feel what it's like to be dangling twenty feet above the floor searching for a way to plant your foot before your strength gives out or your fingers slip. Challenge gravity and make your way across a horizontal overhang where your body is barely able to hold on. Climb the Rutgers Rock Wall and do it all.

Climbing takes place with a climber/belayer system. Those with previous experience can take a skills test. Newcomers and beginners must take a 2 hour intro class that will teach the basic safety skills and "belay" technique. Visit the Non-Credit Class page for belay class information, or call the Rock Wall at 732-932-5811 for class information. Our staff will set you up with gear and let you give it a try. The rock wall is also available for private parties during non-open recreation hours.

Admission

Admission to the Rutgers Rock Wall is ONLY available to Rutgers students, faculty, staff and members who present a valid pictured University ID at the entrance door.

Open Climbing Sessions Are Available At Convenient Times

The Rutgers Rock Wall is open during the Fall and Spring semesters, Monday through Thursday from 7:00pm to 10:30pm and on Sundays from 5pm until 8pm. The rock wall is closed during the summer. Times may vary during certain times of the year. The up-to-date schedule for the rock wall can be found on our Facility Schedule page.

Trial Climbs Are Available for the First Time Climber

If you've never climbed before we'll be happy to assist you with your first climbing experience. Stop at the desk and let the attendant know that you are visiting the Rock Wall for the first time. The attendant will arrange for one of our Wall Supervisors to give you a trial climb. You'll get assistance selecting shoes, putting on a harness and tying into the belay rope. The Wall Supervisor will also explain the rules of the facility and what you need to know to get started. The best part of the trial climb though is that he or she will act as your own personal belayer for your first two climbs. Sensational!

The Belay Screening Test

Every climber must use a belayer when climbing. To be a belayer at the Rutgers Rock Wall you must undergo a screening test to determine whether you are capable of performing good belaying technique, tying the proper knots, inspecting the belaying devices, harnesses and carabiners and understand the safety rules posted at the Rock Wall. Climbers who are capable of belaying may make arrangements to take the screening test at the desk in the Outdoor Recreation Center.

Belay Classes

Belay classes are available each week for those who would like to learn the proper technique. Class schedules are available at the desk. Reservations can be made at the same location. Belay classes are held both day and evening by appointment. Classes cost $15 and teach fundamentals and proper use of gear, knot tying, safety, and belaying. Classes are taught with no more than a 1:4 ratio and last between 2 and 3 hours. Call or leave a message at 732-932-8204 to make an appointment today.

We Loan Quality Equipment

Good climbers rely on quality equipment for both safety and comfort. The Rutgers Rock Gym makes it simple and inexpensive for you to experience indoor rock climbing with some of the best equipment on the market. We loan Petzl harnesses and Blue Water Air Brake belay devices free of charge and have Five-Ten shoes and chalk bags available for a small rental fee.

Interesting Routes Are Constantly Changing

Routes are suggested paths you can take to the top of the wall. They are colored coded and rated from G0 to G7 (G7 is the most challenging) to let you know how tricky the route setter has made the puzzle you see before you on the wall. They are meant to present you with an added challenge every time you climb. Our routes change every month to keep the wall interesting.
