Personal Training

The Rutgers Recreation personal training program can be an extremely rewarding experience. Please take the time to read all of the following information carefully so you understand all of our policies and services. Furthermore we want you to understand what you can expect from our trainers and what we expect of you. To begin, we ask that you submit a personal training request packet and payment at anyone of our four offices (College Ave Gym Room 105, Cook/Douglass Recreation Center Main Office, Easton Avenue Fitness Center Front Desk, Livingston Recreation Center Main Office, The Sonny Werblin Recreation Center Main Office and Rockoff Tech Gym & Spa Front Desk).

All of our trainers have a number of nationally recognized certifications issued by the following governing bodies: AAAI/ISMA, ACE, ACSM, AFAA, IFPA, ISSA, NASM, and NSCA, Our trainers are dedicated to providing you with programs that incorporate the latest research and training techniques. It is our goal to provide you with a safe and effective workout. We want to help you get started and keep you going. With our expertise and guidance and commitment on your part, you’ll get the results you desire.

When you first sign up, you will be required to purchase one of our start-up package. The start up package consists of two separate one hour sessions. The first session will consist of an assessment of your fitness profile. In addition, you will learn about your resting and exercising heart rates, pressure, and estimated VO2 Max. You will also undergo a basic postural and functional analysis specific to the package you have purchased. You will receive materials that explain what all of these values mean and we'll explain how they relate to your personalized exercise program. At the end of this assessment, you will receive a FitCheck card which will allow you to use our cardiovascular equipment.

The second session is your first workout. We will take you through your program, show you how to do all of your exercises and tell you why you are doing those particular exercises.

On Fridays, the Fitness Staff will post the answers to two questions per week.

Start-up Private Training Packages

(Includes 2, one-hour sessions (session 1 is an assesment and consultation; session 2 is a workout) and a code good for a 3-month trial of Vitabot online nutritional counseling.

After you complete your start-up package, you may decide to continue training with us for updated workout progressions and/or for continued motivation. You may purchase single sessions, a package of five, or a package of ten.

Partner Training

You may decide to train with a partner either for extra motivation and support or simply to save money by sharing the cost of training. The start up package would consist of two 1.5-hour sessions. During the first 1.5 hours a trainer would guide you and your training partner through fitness assessment. During the second 1.5-hour session, the trainer will guide you and your training partner through a workout which will be based on your goals, schedule, and assessment results. Once the start-up package is complete, you may decide to purchase continuing partner sessions. Continued sessions are 1 hour in duration and can not be divided into half sessions.

Half-Hour Private Training Sessions

After you complete a full start-up package you may purchase any of our continuing packages (1 session, 5 sessions, 10 sessions) at regular price. You can ask your trainer to split these sessions into 1/2 hour sessions. One 1-hour session would then become two 1/2 hour sessions, five and ten 1-hour sessions could be split a number of ways. You may decide to split all of them or a portion of them. It would be up to you and your trainer. Not available with partner training.
