Open Water

Scuba

There's always something new, fascinating or challenging about venturing into the underwater world.

Your mind may be mesmerized by clouds of colorful fish, your curiosity raised by mysterious remains of sunken ships or your creativity awakened by the art of underwater photography.

Your diving interests may range from a casual pastime pursued on vacation, to a constant passion, even a career. Diving offers something for everyone.

The Open Water course introduces you to the basics of Scuba Diving, including dive theory, equipment and the underwater world and environment. You learn to dive by diving in a swimming pool, starting shallow but spending time having fun in the deep end by the end of the course.

After the academic and confined water training, you complete your certification by making four dives in Open Water.

Course Fees:

Call 732-445-0462 for course fee.  Fees include course materials, use of all scuba equipment and certification.  No equipment purchase required!

Certification Dives

Students must complete four training dives in open water for their certification. Certification dives may be made locally or during any Rutgers Scuba sponsored trip. Local certification dives are conducted at the Dutch Springs Recreation Area in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.

It is also possible for you to organize certification dives separately from Rutgers Scuba activities.

Students must pay Dutch Springs $22 per day for entry into the facility and $6 per day for air fills. The training dives take place over a weekend and students make two dives on Saturday and two on Sunday. We schedule morning and afternoon sessions.

After the dives on Sunday, divers return to the Werblin Recreation Center in the evening to receive their certification cards.
