Dive Master

Dive MasterThis is it! The highest nonprofessional diver rating you can achieve.

You get to hang out with prospective divers of the opposite sex and design cool websites like this one. If you so desire you can go on to become a scuba instructor, and beyond, but there is probably no other rating with a more diverse meaning than Divemaster. This makes the roles that a Divemaster must fulfill so different that you are warranted never to be bored.

A Divemaster's role in Discover Scuba sessions is to help divers with their equipment (while being asked all kinds of questions). In regular open water training sessions, your role is to take care of students that have difficulties learning the skills while the instructor evaluates everybody else.

Out in open water, your mission is to assist and supervise divers. As a Divemaster, you have a better chance to chat with everybody since the instructor is usually busy fixing all the problems. This allows you to asses the situation and help the instructor pinpoint possible problems with nervous divers or the environment (among other things).

When no instructor is around, the Divemaster may act as an underwater guide ensuring that all divers have an enjoyable diving experience. If you know the environment, you can point out where the nice things are; if you don't, then you can take underwater pictures, help out the local divers and make sure that novice divers in your group don't go beyond their capabilities.
